Decomposing cover crops modify root-associated microbiome composition and disease tolerance of cash crop seedlings

چکیده

The assembly of root-associated microbes during the seedling stage has strong impact on subsequent performance crops. Major factors influencing this are crop species identity and composition potential root-colonizing in bulk soil. latter can be modified by soil management, such as organic amendments. incorporation residues cover crops before start growing season cash presents an interesting option for steering microbiomes there is a wide range with different properties available farmers. In greenhouse study, we examined effect amendments milled shoot root materials seven (niger seed, phacelia, rapeseed, radish, vetch, black oat buckwheat) bacteria fungi seedlings four (asparagus, carrot, onion sugar beet). Field-grown material used study was collected at two time points (before after winter) which had plant elemental composition. mixture sandy arable soils history soil-borne fungal diseases (Fusarium Rhizoctonia). Within context selection species, found significant modifying effects materials. We show that stronger than identity. High quality (with low C/N ratio) caused profound shifts within Proteobacteria increases relative abundance certain microbial groups Bacillaceae Mortierellomycetes. These changes coincided differences establishment survival seedlings. Tolerance beet against pathogen Rhizoctonia solani correlated causing Oxalobacteraceae, Mortierellaceae. However, same increased Fusarium-induced failure asparagus seed germination. This indicates fine-tuning required to realize enhanced functioning microbiomes.

Host Suitability of Potential Cover Crops for Root-knot Nematodes.

Several potential cover crops were evaluated for their susceptibility to Meloidogyne arenaria race 1, M. incognita race 1, and M. javanica in a series of five greenhouse experiments. No galls or egg masses were observed on roots of castor (Ricinus communis), cowpea (Vigna unguiculata cv. Iron Clay), crotalaria (Crotalaria spectabilis), or American jointvetch (Aeschynomene americana). Occasional...

Differential Soil Acidity Tolerance of Tropical Legume Cover Crops

In tropical regions, soil acidity and low soil fertility are the most important yield-limiting factors for sustainable crop production. Using legume cover crops as mulch is an important strategy not only to protect the soil loss from erosion but also to ameliorate soil fertility. Information is limited regarding tolerances of tropical legume cover crops to acid soils. A greenhouse experiment wa...

Root System Architecture and Abiotic Stress Tolerance: Current Knowledge in Root and Tuber Crops

The challenge to produce more food for a rising global population on diminishing agricultural land is complicated by the effects of climate change on agricultural productivity. Although great progress has been made in crop improvement, so far most efforts have targeted above-ground traits. Roots are essential for plant adaptation and productivity, but are less studied due to the difficulty of o...

Root growth and yield of maize as affected by soil compaction and cover crops

The yield of rainfed crops is commonly limited by the availability of soil water during the summer growing season. Channels produced by cover crop roots in fall/winter when soils are relatively moist may facilitate the penetration of compacted soils by subsequent crop roots in summer when soils are relatively dry and hard. Our objective was to determine the effects of fall cover crops on maize ...

Topography Mediates the Influence of Cover Crops on Soil Nitrate Levels in Row Crop Agricultural Systems.

Supplying adequate amounts of soil N for plant growth during the growing season and across large agricultural fields is a challenge for conservational agricultural systems with cover crops. Knowledge about cover crop effects on N comes mostly from small, flat research plots and performance of cover crops across topographically diverse agricultural land is poorly understood. Our objective was to...
